The Giver of Stars Review

The Giver of Stars was a very interesting book to read mostly because the plot was nothing like what I thought the book was about. However, there were some good quotes that I thought would be important to remember if there was anything that you could take away from this story.

The first quote says, “Life is complicated. Which is why finding a little joy where you can is important.” The reason I thought this was important as well was because there is too much sadness that weighs us down and it’s hard to remember to find at least one small blessing when we go through something hard. Alice, one of the main characters, is mainly saying implying in the story that her relationship with Bennett Van Cleve is complicated. She goes through some hard situations with her husband and father-in-law that result in an unexpected outcome.

Furthermore, Jojo Moyes describes the way Alice feels sometimes by stating, “She might as well be one of those dolls… smiling, immobile, decorative, and silent.” In the book, there comes a time when Alice doesn’t feel heard and so it’s interesting to compare her life to that of a doll. She doesn’t have much to say, but when she does it’s important.

A big part of the story is that some women in the town came together to start a traveling library so people could read books more frequently. Some of the books taught things that people had never thought about before. Alice in particular finds a book that makes her change her opinion on her life and she faces some big decisions. Moyes goes on to say, “There is always a way out of a situation. Might be ugly… but you are never trapped.” She has a decision to make.

Overall, this book was fairly decent to read. It wasn’t a 5 star read for me, however, there were some cool quotes in the story. I might not read this book again because I didn’t really gather a main idea or moral of the story like most books. Maybe there was one there that I’m not finding. If you have read this book, I’m curious. Did you find a moral of the story?

Thanks for reading :) I hope these thoughts helped you decide whether to read the book or not. Let me know in the comments what thoughts you have pertaining to the book.
