#NOW Review

Book Written by Dr. Max McKeown

This book is the perfect match for you, if:

  • you struggle living in the past versus the present.

  • have a need to discover what's important now.

  • psychology interests you.

This book taught me a lot about how to deal with my depression. I had a lot of takeaways as I read this book about living in the present. The number one thing that stuck with me was "done is better than perfect" (60). When have you seen this in your life? Is getting things finished really better than having perfection? What are your thoughts?

In my life, I'm pretty sure I've felt more peace by getting things completed than having it be absolutely perfect. Another takeaway was "whatever you are worrying or daydreaming about subtracts from whatever you are trying to do" (63). How interesting is it that by spending time in the past or future eliminates the ability to act now? I had never really thought of this before, but it seems to speak for what it really is.

Next, "if you feel powerful, you are more likely to take action, and if you take action, you are more likely to be seen as powerful" (113). How have you seen this in your life? Do you take action when you feel power? As I read this book, I discovered there are a lot of goals we can have in our individual lives and we ultimately have to find some source of power in order to accomplish those goals. What do you do to feel power?

The book also compares what McKeown calls Nowist mindset and Thenist mindset. Nowists love moving, make fast decisions, are hard to stop, self-trusting, and have do-it energy. On the other end, Thenists look at tasks as means, they make slow decisions, are easy to interrupt, self-doubting, and have a what-if worry outlook on life. Which one sounds more enjoyable?

Overall, I really enjoyed learning about some psychology in this book and I think you will realize some new insights that you hadn't thought of before as you read this book. I'd love to hear what you discovered about this book, feel free to comment below.
