June Reading
Another month, another book I say. Let’s see what books are on my June list to read!
Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt- I had to read this book since there is going to be a movie about it! In this book, the main character, Tova Sullivan, is a widow who works a night shift at an aquarium. In the story, Tova develops an unusal friendship with an octopus named Marcellus. The main message behind the book is that unlikely relationships can help people confront grief and find hope again. I’m excited to read this unique story and see what lies ahead for the characters.
Saving Zoë by Alyson Noël- This one has been on my to be read list for a few years now. I’m hoping I like it since I’ve waited so long to read it! This book is a young adult mystery that revolves around grief and family secrets. One of the main characters, Echo struggles for a while after her older sister, Zoë was murdered. In the story, Zoë’s former boyfriend gives Echo her diary and she discovers the complexity of her sister’s life and the secrets that she had hidden. Echo feels as though she needs to investigate the events around her sister’s death. This book sounds very mysterious and I’m anxious and curious to find out what happened to Echo’s sister.
Misfits by Jen Calonita- This is a middle grade novel that occurs in the land of Enchantasia, where royals are expected to attend Royal Academy. This is where future princes and princesses learn to rule and how to behave properly. The main character is Princess Devin and she would rather care for animals than learning any sort of etiquette. Apparently, she can talk to animals and dreams of caretaking for the animals rather than being a princess. The main moral of the story is that being different can sometimes be more of a strength than a weakness. I’m hoping to fly through this series since it is targeted to a younger audience. We’ll see if the story is still meaningful and memorable.
Outlaws by Jen Calonita- This is the second book to the Misfits series and revolves more around the “headmistress”, Olivina, who works with villains. Princess Devin is banished to Hollow Woods as an outlaw. She and her friends set out to find people who will expose Olivina before she overtakes Enchantasia. The message behind this book is that being a true leader is about courage and standing up for what is right.
Heroes by Jen Calonita- The last book of the Misfits series involves villians such as Rumplestiltskin and Alva who cast a curse where students have to share the castle with others from the Fairy Tale Reform School. Throughout this book, Princess Devin learns about staying true to herself despite what others in the castle say about her future. I think these books in the series have some cute messages that could be worth reading about so I’m excited to see how the writing is and maybe I’ll end up reading her other series called the Fairy Tale Reform School series.
The Unthinkable: Who Survives When Disaster Strikes— and Why by Amanda Ripley- This book is about how people respond to situations like terrorist attacks, fires, plane crashes, hurricanes, etc. The book has interviews with different types of people such as survivors, disaster experts, and first responders. This book is intriguing to me because I want to learn more about why some people are able to adapt to the circumstance and survive while others are not and to know what helps in a tragic circumstance.
I am hoping with all these books that I will start finding some more 5 star stories! What books have you given a 5 star rating?
Also big news in the book world! Veronica Roth, author of Divergent, just wrote a new book called The Sixth Faction! I am so excited to read this! You can grab it on pre-order now and it comes out October 6th!
