Little Women- 5 Quotes I Loved
By Louisa May Alcott
I feel like I can hardly review this book since it is a classic book. However, here are some of my thoughts about this book. There are 777 pages to this book and I felt like it took a good half of the book to start the story. It felt like a lot of the beginning was just fluff. Once the story got going I felt like it was very pleasant to read and had some good points to the plot.
The four March sisters tell their story of life and love for others as they each have their own unique story to tell. The four sisters are Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy. Meg is the oldest and most responsible of the sisters. Jo is very independent and wants to be a writer. Beth is the second youngest sister and she is musical. Then, Amy the youngest is the most fashionable and artistic of them all.
Here are some quotes that I personally liked from the story:
“Beth ceased to fear him from that moment, and sat there talking to him as cozily as if she had known him all her life; for love casts out fear, and gratitude can conquer pride” (Page 99).
Mrs. March says, “to be loved and chosen by a good man is the best and sweetest thing which can happen to a woman; and I sincerely hope my girls may know this beautiful experience” (Page 151).
“Be comforted, dear soul! there is always light behind the clouds” (Page 260).
“Jo’s voice was full of tender reproach, and her heart ached to think of the solitary struggle that must have gone on while Beth learned to say good-by to health, love, and life, and take up her cross so cheerfully” (Page 591).
“…because they hoped to brighten other homes, believing that their own feet would walk more uprightly along the flowery path before them, if they smoothed rough ways for other feet, and feeling that their hearts were more closely knit together by a love which could tenderly remember those less blest than they” (Page 727).
Overall, I did really enjoy this book as it had some unique messages about life and love. I’m not sure I will read this book again so I gave it 4 stars because the story was intriguing and unique, but I can’t say I’ll pick up a book that’s almost 800 pages, twice. It’s highly unlikely for me!
I would recommend this book if you:
have a desire to read older writing or learn from history well.
are a woman who enjoys a good wholesome romance story.
understands history from around the civil war.
has a good understanding or wants to learn of the culture and lifestyle in London, England.
